Policy
Wi-fi access is available at both Main and the Shute Park branch, courtesy of the Friends of the Library and Comcast. Laptops with wireless networking cards may connect to the Internet. No passwords are required; all visitors are welcome.
Below is the Wi-fi section of our Internet Policy:- The Library's wireless network is not secure. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and the applicable software.
- Library staff is not able to provide technical assistance and no guarantee can be made that you will be able to make a wireless connection.
- Printers are not available via the wireless connection; if you need to print, save to a floppy and use one of our public workstations to print.
- The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from connection to the Library's network.
- Patrons using the network must comply with the “Rules of Computer Use in Adult Reference Areas” http://www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/Library/Policies.aspx#net) except that users are not subject to time restrictions.
- The network may not be used to send “spam” email. Users may not make any attempt to cause degradation of system performance or obstruct other people’s work by consuming excessive system resources.
Logon
Your computer should automatically detect the library's wireless connection. You will need:
- A wireless network interface card, 802.11b or later.
- A charged battery (there are some AC outlets available in study carrells) .
- Compatible headphones, if you plan to use audio files.
If you cannot connect to the internet, use the following guidelines:
- Wireless Card Settings:
Use the software that came with your wireless card or computer to configure the settings and to verify a connection to the library’s wireless network. - SSID (network name) = "Shute Library" at Shute; "Hillsboro Main Library" or “Buffalo” at Main.
- WEP = disable WEP encryption
- Mode or Network Type = Infrastructure mode or Access Point
Handouts are available at the Reference desk with Network Settings for Windows 2000 & XP, Windows 98, and Macintosh.
Internet Explorer Tips:
- Please note that, depending on your version of software, there may be variations in the procedures.
- From Control Panel, select Internet Options > Connections tab.
- If you also have a dial-up connection, it should not be set to "Always dial my default connection."
- LAN Settings should be "Automatically detect settings" and leave the Proxy server settings blank.
