The library staff welcomes you as a volunteer member and hopes your volunteer experience will be a gratifying one. This page provided some introductory information to help you get started. It describes the operations and procedures of the volunteer program.

Volunteer Information and FAQ

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

To volunteer without a parent present, you must be 14.

How are volunteers selected and trained?

First, fill out an application.

Second, have an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Third, attend a library volunteer orientation and begin training.

Is there a time commitment for volunteering?

We encourage volunteers to make a minimum commitment of 4 hours monthly for 3 months.

Do I have to have a set schedule?

We prefer that you come the same time each week.  It is helpful to our staff when you have a dependable, set schedule.  However, special requirements and short school assignments are exceptions.

How long does it take before I can start volunteering?

On average, it takes 1-2 weeks after your interview to be placed as a volunteer and begin training, if we are able to match you with an activity.

Are there special projects or internships?

Yes.  And depending on what your educational goals are, we often can design something to fit your needs.

We strive to provide a meaningful and enjoyable volunteer experience for those who wish to share their time and skills with us.  Thank you!

Volunteers Are Important

Volunteers play a valuable role in keeping the library running. The generous contribution of your talents and resources benefits the community members who use and depend on the Hillsboro Public Library. With the help and dedication of many volunteers like you, the Hillsboro Public Library has become one of the most successful libraries in Oregon. Thank You!

Library Volunteer Policies

Attendance/ Absences. The library staff depends on volunteers to work the hours they agreed to work. If you can not make it in on your day, or are going to be late please call your direct supervisor or the volunteer coordinator (503) 615-3457. Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of four hours a month, for a period of at least 3 months.

Parking. We ask that volunteers reserve the parking spots close to the library for patrons, and park further out in the parking lot away from the library.

Timekeeping Procedures. Volunteers must sign in when they arrive at the library and sign out when they leave.

Resignation. Should you decide to leave the volunteer program, please notify the volunteer coordinator as soon as possible.

Staff Mentor. Please check-in with your staff mentor each time you arrive for your shift. This staff member can let you know if there are any changes in library procedures and can also direct you to work that may be higher priority for the day. This person can also help you find work for you if your shift is not over and you have accomplished your normal assigned duties.

Name Badges. Volunteers are provided name badges. Please wear them at all times when on duty. This allows you to be identified by the library staff and to gain entrance into non-public areas of the library. Name badges are kept in your mailbox when not in use.  With your permission your picture may be taken and posted in the work room.

Mailboxes. Every volunteer is provided with an individual mailbox in the workroom.  When you arrive for your shift, please check your mailbox for information and updates from the Volunteer Coordinator and other library staff.

Personal Conduct. The library is a public institution. Staff and volunteers alike are asked to speak quietly and to be courteous and considerate of other volunteers, staff, and patrons. Library staff and volunteers alike are subject to the same check-out, return and overdue policies as patrons, in regards to library materials.

Dress Code. Volunteers' personal appearance contributes to a favorable public image for the library. Volunteers are expected to dress neatly and modestly. Jeans and knee length shorts are permitted; however, mini skirts, halter tops, tube tops, spaghetti straps, and other revealing apparel may not be worn while volunteering at the library. Refrain from sporting bare midriffs, low necklines, or wearing T-shirts or sweatshirts bearing controversial messages. Volunteers and staff members are requested not to wear scented products as there are people who have severe allergies to these products.

Confidentiality. Volunteers as well as staff members are asked to treat all information about patrons or library staff in a confidential manner. This includes all information that may be passed through word of mouth, computer documents, and other records.

Emergencies. If you have an accident or see an accident or incident, please notify the Volunteer Coordinator or a nearby staff member immediately.

Using Computers. Volunteers assisting with computer data entry should seek the help of their assigned staff person in order to get a volunteer log-on for computer access. It is prohibited to bring floppy disks from home to use on staff computers.

Staff Lounge. The staff lounge is available during lunch and breaks. If you place something in the refrigerator, put your name and date on it. Please clean up after yourself in the lounge area.

Library Phone. Volunteers may use a library phone to make short, local and important calls. Please check with a staff member as to which phone you should use. Cell phones are to be turned off or on vibrate while in the library.
