This is a seven-member board (two from outside City limits). After an initial four-year term, the Mayor may reappoint for an additional four-year term. Members are volunteers and receive no compensation.
The Board meets monthly, usually on the third Thursday, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., alternating between the Main Library and the Shute Park Branch.
General responsibilities of Board members are to:

serve in an advisory capacity to City Council, formulating rules and policies for the governance of the library and reviewing library expenditures for approval and payment

make recommendations regarding staffing levels, working conditions and duties of the library staff, subject to budget limitations and standard city personnel policies and procedures

review and approve all written rules, policies and procedures for operation of the Hillsboro Public Library

approve an annual budget request

accept, acquire, use, expend or own, in the name of the city, any real or personal property under the jurisdiction of the library board with the approval of the city council

select sites for a library building and/or location of library facilities with the ultimate site to be approved by the city council

enter into contracts subject to prior approval of the city council
-
be informed concerning the role public libraries play as centers for intellectual freedom
